World Cup 2022

Recommended Posts

England are a good side but not the best. Better teams than England have failed to win a major tournament and I didn’t see a single person predict that we’d win the World Cup before it kicked off - yet there is outrage by some that we got knocked out by the World Cup holders and favourites.

I don’t see how another manager significantly improves us. We played as well against France as we could have hoped and they were slightly better. No shame in that.

As ever, I was disappointed that England got knocked out on Saturday night.

In contrast, I was absolutely gutted, and am still annoyed, at Rovers losing to Preston.

The emotions the two generate are chalk and cheese.

Spot on. My Scottish friends don’t believe me but I did say on our works do on Friday night that if I was given the choice of England beating France or Rovers beating the nobbers I would take a Rovers win every day of the week and twice on a Sunday.

I would normally feel the same and agree.

But knockout World Cup football vs plodding along with no hope of promotion in the Championship for another season there is only one winner for emotions.

We lost to PNE and I was embarrassed and angry. We lost to France and I was gutted and devastated.

So he's not world class in your opinion. But he's surely still the best we've got. What do you want him to do? Retire?

I just don't feel that he should be playing no matter what....he gets a free pass and bringing others off to leave him on is criminal.  Saka should never have come off the other day, Kane should have.  The penalty miss encapsulated this.

We all have our favourites. Messi doesn't excite me. Of this generation I'd rather watch C Ronaldo in his pomp. It's something in the way he moves. And neither can hold a candle to Pele

The media and in particular TV adoration of Messi is sickening and the Argentinians' celebrations when they beat the Netherlands showed them to be the scumbags they are

Come on Croatia

Messi doesn't excite you? There's nobody of our current generation who can dribble like him, nobody who can pass like him, only Ronaldo scores at the frequency he does. If he doesn't excite you, then I dread to think how miserable you find watching Rovers.

And fair enough about their celebrations, but I notice you didn't mention the Dutch players in the face of every Argentine penalty taker. Did you have the same disgust when England players (rightfully) got in the face of Colombia players in 2018?

I find it interesting that folk get really invested in England every couple of years to the extent of ‘devastation’.

I enjoy a tournament, especially in a summer as a distraction, and obviously I want England to get as far as possible. But literally as soon as the whistle went on Saturday night, it was an ‘oh well’ and I won’t give that team a single thought now until June 2024… On the flip side I’m still fuming about PNE now.

Sorry, no. Messi isn't one of my favourite players.  It's all about opinions and personal preferences. There's a poster on here who's very anti Harry Kane. I don't understand that as I think England are lucky to have him, but that's his view

Really pleased Argentina won and Messi was brilliant, and I’ve seen Pele at his peak and he would be one of the first to congratulate Messi as one of the greats.
The hatred for the Argies comes from the Falklands conflict, get over it, that’s one we won.
I have been to Argentina a number of times since the conflict and have never experienced any anti British animosity. A wonderful country and really friendly people, unless you’re at a River Plate v Boca Juniors match.

The top gear lads didn’t find it too friendly.

Same here

I was lucky enough to see England win the World Cup in 1966 and I've been waiting 56 years for us to win another tournament

Then you're getting older and you realise it's not going to happen in your lifetime

That's why the France game was so gut wrenching. Again

I got over the Rovers result by the time England had kicked off albeit somewhat alcohol induced.

I'm still not quite over us being out of the World Cup whilst watching how easily Croatia were pushed aside and (prediction) how easily Morocco will be dismantled this evening.

World Cup wins are once in a lifetime events if you're lucky and if we'd have scored that penalty, I think we'd have won it this time round. I get to watch Rovers try get another 3 points every 3 days normally, I'll be another 4 years older the next time I watch England in a World Cup.

No real comparison for me.

Of course, but I can't understand how Messi doesn't excite people!

And I agree on Kane, England are lucky to have him. Not from the same planet as Messi, though.

Yeah, I'd agree with this

Rovers will get another chance to right the PNE wrong in this season

We will have to wait 4 years for a chance of retribution

I am still gutted with the result. I couldn't bring myself to watch the game last night. I won't watch the semi tonight either

The only way I watch the final is if Morocco make it. Other than that I won't bother with the final either

Oh I get that in isolation a World Cup QF is obviously a bigger event than a Championship game.

I suppose for me the difference is that I have no emotional connection to the England team, I check in to watch a few matches in a tournament every couple of years, so if they lose it doesn’t upset me one iota, whereas Blackburn Rovers is one of the biggest things in my life, day in day out, year in year out, if the team struggles, the club struggles, and that can really impact the future health of our great club, so defeats and bad runs feel much more existential. England lose? Well they’ll just go again as one of the favourites next time and I’ll see how they go in 2024.

Watching us lose out every time since 1966 sort of wears down your enthusiasm. I remember not being able to get to sleep after we lost to West Germany in 1970. Same when we lost to the Dingles recently.

I hope you don’t mean the great footballer but out an out cheat and despicable excuse for a human being with the name M*******a

He handballed a goal,no different from a player diving to win a pen,he had a drug problem not the first and definitely not the last footballer to have but he could still produce magic on the pitch

We will never have that winning mentality that Argentina Germany Italy France Brazil have.  Its not a particularly good Argentina side yet though are in the final while people are patting England on the back for playing well against France and losing.  I have never bought into this well done England for playing well tripe. Winners and losers

Didn't you say you wanted Southgate to stay on? Isn't it the managers job to install a winning mentality yet he's struggled in the biggest games to get that into the players.

Yeah... I was over the England result by the day after. Disappointing but never mind, maybe next time. Meanwhile I'm still holding some major resentment over the Burnley and Preston performances. I suppose it's different for everyone though. There were a couple on here who outright said in the Burnley match thread the result and performance didn't bother them at all, which is hard for me to understand, but maybe for others it'd be hard for them to understand why I was over England going out of the WC by the next day.

Put it this way:

Come tournament time, I desperately want England to do as well as possible and the only reason I found the France match hard to take is because I completely believe we'd have won the WC if we'd beaten France.

HOWEVER

I'm currently on a Rovers forum, as I have been for well over a decade, discussing even minutiae of Blackburn Rovers, whereas I only found out Steve Holland's name yesterday as a dark horse to replace Southgate.

Honestly is that what all the hate is about? A handball and cocaine habit 36 years ago?

Ireland were denied qualification to the 2010 World cup by Thierry handball, I was pissed about it for a week at the time and I thought about it a few times when the WC was on. I don't hate Henry now, I can still appreciate he was an outstanding footballer (though not in the same league as Messi, Maradona, Pele or even Zidane) Jesus I probably even cheered on France when they played England in that WC (I joke)

I honestly cannot believe the vitriol reserved for Diego Maradona, in comparison to George Best (raging alchoholic) who is regularly put on a pedistal on this site.

I loved Maradona (probably because he was such damaged goods) he was a special player, he was incredible in Mexico in 86, but I was more impressed by the way he single handidly dragged a very ordinary Argentina team to a WC final against W. Germany in 1990. Now that Messi has pretty much done the same here I think my mind is made up that he is the Greatest of All Time.

Everyone's milage varies as they say.

Maradona and Messi are both genius footballers. I can't pick between the two.

Maradona gets vilified because he handballed England out of a World Cup. That rankles a lot of people who saw it as it was only a few years after the Falklands war, and in 1986 that type of play was something only "cheating foreigners" did. The Champions League has all but ensured a standardisation of how top level football is played globally. Players from all nations now engage in subtle and not so subtle acts of gamesmanship.

The players just aren't winners.  Southgate can online do so much
