Back home and got half way through this thread but thought I’d share feelings before being influenced by comments…

Referee first off all…let the game flow perhaps being generous but some home bias there from clear fouls, clear yellows, clear shithousing, clear corners etc…not a weak ref necessarily but just pretty useless. I’ve not seen replays of Diaz push in the back or Diaz potential handball yet so can’t comment on that.

The team…I have to admit I saw the line up and thought what the….Mola first league start? Garrett about 4th? Neither Wharton starting? What on earth. Not sure who was injured etc but just seemed very bizarre to just go rogue like that, especially after the cup where we rested players. Honestly don’t think JDT has a scooby and I fear for our regression after the World Cup.

Horrible feeling losing to them, but they’re so far superior it’s crazy this was even a 2nd v 3rd battle. Let’s just hope we can cling on to the top 6…..and beat them at Home!

It’s not even that we need to play direct. We need to stop playing goal kicks to center backs in the box. Why possess 100 yards to goal with them having time to set up their pressure

Somewhat agree with this (although I do on paper see logic of playing out the back pulling them into our half and then launching over the top to Diaz) but my issue and said it earlier in the thread is once we played it from keeper to centre back to left back to centre mid - we've no one who wants to turn their man and drive.  And when we don't have Diaz on, we recycle it back to defenders that's where panic starts

How does that Mola play with Wharton on bench  when stats says we normally win with him.playing.

Almost felt like it was JDT with some weird “they’re too passionate I don’t want them involved” or something. Was Adam injured? The Scott Wharton choice a complete head scratcher.
Imagine his manager leaving Maldini (obviously not comparing Wharton as Maldini as players) on the bench for a Milan derby.

Even if we play it short from Kaminski, one pass wide to the left/right centre back or the wing backs, then float a ball over the heads of the opposition full backs. Do that with Gallagher and Diaz knowing that's the tactic and running full pelt it puts pressure on the opposition. They don't have many options. Back to the keeper who in turn can be quickly closed down or put it out for a throw in. That's not rocket science. But it gets us up the pitch quickly and will get us in behind.

I was looking at Championship stats the other day and we've actually played more long balls than any other team in the division. But they're mainly floated down the middle which is easily dealt with or hoofed under panic. Simply because we play so many passes across the back and invite pressure. Most of the time though, that's more appealing than the alternative which is suicidal passes into the central midfielders who are being hounded and lose the ball in horrible situations.

We tend not to play well because of things we are doing, but play well when we face a team that don't press.

Nearly everybody presses today. They certainly will if they saw this game.

One final thing, if Barnes had done that to my team mate after his goal, he would have been out of the return fixture, as I would have twated him into the middle of next year.

From the moment he hit Kaminski after the ball had gone in the first half, Barnes knew he could get away with almost anything. For a Premiership referee, he was shocking. Rovers were poor, but it is very difficult to defend against a team who feel they can get away with almost anything. Especially Barnes who tried to intimidate with almost the referees apparent blessing.

Or played up to the likes of vertically challenged players like Dolan or Smozics or Markanday. So it comes straight back.

Barnes is certainly not a likeable character, but sometimes you need a bit of skulldugery to win games.

We don't have anyone like that, It's all too nicey, nicey.

Exactly. Teams promote that play aggressive football. Teams that don’t, won’t.

I’m still not sure about Tomasson, but burnley were intent on playing offense.

This just leaves such a sour taste in one’s mouth. We have to sit & wait a month for the season to resume, and this is our most recent memory, not sitting 3rd on the table (which many of us did not feel possible before the season started).

West Ham didnt really, felt they didnt do their homework. Burnley didn't make that mistake.

We really need a strong central striker so we can play it long with confidence if needed. Id put 100% of the transfer budget into that personally.

We helped set the tone with Barnes from about the 5th minute. Kaminski going down holding his face after Barnes touched his chest was the start. He was rolling around pretending to be hurt instead of getting aggressive back. The ref, who won’t believe his luck at how few incidents there were, was never going to be fooled by that.

We were completely passive and let Barnes take liberties all game. He flew through one of our midfielders (forget who), which admittedly should’ve been a yellow all day long, but it’d have been really easy to make him regret doing that challenge.

Closest we got to dishing anything out was Ayala while defending a corner and Travis’s unintelligent and pointless booking. We were pathetic in all honesty. Bring Souness and Flitcroft in on a consultancy basis for a week before we play them again, see if they can find anyone with a pair of bollocks in our changing room.

We were spineless.

Its the sum total of twelve years of our beloved Club being mismanaged on all levels..welcome to Venky World.

It’s the likes of my grandson I feel sorry for. He’ll be 16 after Xmas. Born on the day we drew with Man City at Ewood. All he’s ever known is the shite the chicken chokers have served up.

I’m just hoping he can be VerySympatheticClaret when he logs back on at this stage.

I don't know if it's deliberate but their absence today is respected by me. They aren't kicking us when we are down. If that is true then thanks to them.

And at West Ham Edun played a ball through to Vale that dissected their centre halves. I have asked the question before but how many goals have come from playing out from the back (from any team)? In our case I can hardly remember us getting to the half way line never mind scoring. It's a fad and managers are simply expecting players to do something they simply aren't capable of.

It's difficult to see what is gained by playing out from the back rather than playing into midfiels or even just a long ball and paick up the second ball. It only works if the defenders are talented enough on the ball to gat the ball through the press and expose the opposition on the turn.
