This is wild! Not sure what I’ve done to incur such research of my posting history 😂

I was going to do a full reply but I thought what’s the point as I’d be making the same points I made in my post above.

Morton - 28 starts

Wharton - 7 starts. 2 exceptional performances.

That’s why they get treated differently. It’s not double standards. If Wharton had played all season and cost us numerous goals with sloppy passing, and was still playing poorly but repeatedly getting picked, he would be getting the same stick Morton gets.

Also, I'm willing to hold my hands up. I was fully in the camp of him needing to show it in training before he's in the first team.

But after seeing him again today, even if he's lacking in stamina there's no way he shouldn't at least command a place on the bench. I'm all for JDT giving him a hard time and making him work his arse off to keep getting better, but he is an absolute gift. He's got more talent in his little toe than most of our squad.

There appears to be an obsession amongst some posters about 'bulking up' young players. Like Buckley Wharton has terrific balance and can ride challenges so well because of this. He demonstrated against Blackpool that he can tackle too. Tackling is more about timing than steaming in like a bull in a China Shop.

Nah fuck that. Get him on the bull steroids and bulk him up.

But he would not finish many games in modern football, the dirty git.

Nah, he could give a kick but he could take a kick as well. The really dirty ones were the sly ones.

I remember reading an autobiography of a famous player in Nobby’s era. The five forwards who he said were the really dirty gits - Terry Paine, Roy Vernon, Peter Osgood, Johnny Giles, Johnny Morrisey.

How many of those would you have down ?

Wharton needs half as many touches as anyone else and can see passes nobody else can. He tired towards the end, understandably, but could be a big player for us in the run in.

He tired after 30 minutes.  He needs to work on his cardio.  Was visibly flagging when Huddersfield were breaking on 32 mins....I think he struggles in a 2....I think he needs a couple of years to get his man strength.  Great technical player and potentially our captain in a few years.

Just slot him into the Buckley role in the 4-2-3-1. Get Travis to pick up any slack with regards to running.

Morton can sit on the bench.

I wouldn't have said that about Vernon or Osgood. Surprised by that.

Terry Paine surprised me but this guy knew what he was talking about. Osgood didn’t surprise me.  He was another like Giles who got a bad injury early in his career and made sure he didn’t get another one.

Yeah he will struggle In a 2, as does Morton. Think the 3 man midfield works well for us and something we should defiantly look to proceed with for the remaining games. We have Garrett to come in when & if a player is lagged.

For me he's miles ahead of anything we have technically. Look at the way he takes the ball on his back foot, half turn and moves it forward. He has no issue in receiving the ball when marked and is deceptively strong in possession. I agree his fitness needs working on but, blimey, we have some player on our hands with this lad.

I played in a five-a-side game with Peter Osgood when he was in his late 40s and he was still a fucking animal even then.

I played against Ian Brittain about 25 years ago. Think he was playing for Kelbrook. Still a good player. I left my foot in when he cleared the ball and he kicked my foot. He wasn't happy and threw a lump of turf in my face 🙂 Once a Dingle...

He scored 'that' goal, didn't he...

His match fitness won't have been helped by being out of the first team for so long, plus an injury not all that long ago. I don't think we should read too much into his cardio until he has had a proper run in the first team.

How would being a dirty bastard help him avoid another injury? Surely it just winds up opponents into having a pop at them?

Totally agree. He reminds me a lot of Simon Barker when he first broke through. If he can score goals like Barker did we might just have something extremely special.
