I'm desperately seeking any comfort I can from Adam Wharton not being here and the only thing I can slightly grasp is that our academy is rightfully getting some attention.

I think I'd rather it went under the radar than got attention. Whilst clubs were surely already looking at the likes of Finneran and Tyjon, the Wharton success has probably made them feel more like they can't afford to miss the chance of a bargain.

(Sorry, I know you were trying to find positives!)

I wish he had stayed another season ir two but if he had he's not going the Euros.  So stoked for the lad.  Been hoping he would get homesick and demand to be transfered back to us.

Bellingham is an attacking midfielder, Wharton, if he plays, would be as one of the holding midfielders alongside Rice

Personally, I would play

           Pickford

TAA Stones Guehi Shaw

         Rice Wharton

Saka Bellingham Foden

             Kane

And Walker instead of TAA when they play the top tier teams for a bit more defensive stability

Although suspect Southgate will favour Walker at RB and will move TAA to CM in place of Wharton

First game in the group stages is a must not lose game. Not the time to be playing relatively unknowns in central midfield. Adam will get his opportunity. The England hierarchy believe in him. Not sure Waggott knew what he had.

Wrong, it's must win.

Every game is must win.

Wharton will be given his chance a) as a sub if we have a decent lead or b) start in a game where we've already qualified (hopefully!).

Southgate is a cautious manager and Wharton has a long England career ahead of him. Thins invaluable experience for him whether he plays or not.

More Ive thought about it playing Bellingham at 10, Foden left and TAA in midfield makes sense. Bellingham has a physical dimension the other attacking mids and will give teams a lot more to think about if theyre sitting deep and we're getting the ball in the box.

Think the rumoured line up is the right call. TAA needs to sit deep and get pinging the ball around.

i`ll be disapointed if england don`t bear serbia,in fact i`ll be fuming and waggot/pasha/the other indian scum knew exactly what they  had and could`nt wait to cash in,hence we sold him on the cheap to bloody crystal palace

Wharton has a better range of passing than TAA. He can mix it up, short and long, he keeps things ticking over. Whereas TAA is looking for the glory ball most of the time. I could see Wharton playing in midfield for Spain but not TAA, there’s a reason for that.

Gary neville is a nob. Saying Whartons isn't ideal alongside rice

Can't believe how many would prefer to shoehorn TAA in rather than someone who'd literally be ideal with Rice

Had Wharton made the England squad this time next year, Rovers would have been conveniently forgotten and his rise would have purely been attached to Palace.

That's all I've got ... I'm off to sulk!

Some if what I heard that has already happened.  I watched a few games hime olaying for Palace and the comments were subdued tonsay the least.  Had Arnold made those oasses we would have heard commentators drooling and seen endless replays.  I don't think his England teammates brought him into play as much as they could have.  I am really pulling for this kid to light up the Euros.  He has the ability.

‘We don’t have anyone like Kalvin Phillips’. We do Gareth. He’s called Adam Wharton and he’s a significant upgrade.

I might be going to far, but Wharton plays as a Busquets, with creative short passes but given his youth and his apparently natural languid nature, I don't know if I'd trust him as a defensive midfielder. However, he has played in a two with Will Hughes at Palace, where Hughes does a lot of running back and forth for him. This could potentially be replicated with Rice.

That said, I can understand Southgate's hesitation in putting in such an inexperienced player into such a high  pressure situation. I have to admit that I would go for a Bellingham, Gallagher or, even, Mainoo and play two holding midfielders, with some attacking licence. I don't see any real role for Wharton in this tournament but we'll see.

That more than anything shows where Southgate’s heads at. I’m sure he was furious that a 34 year old Jordan Henderson naffed off to the Middle East. He’d be playing in a defensive midfield 2 otherwise.

He made the bold decision to take Wharton but now won’t play him seemingly at all costs. Which begs the question why bring him in the first place.

Indeed. Same with Mainoo, same with Palmer, same with Gordon. He's a stubborn sod is Gareth. He simply has to bring in Wharton or Mainoo against Slovenia. But I bet he'll go with Gallagher.

I think part of the problem is he’s made himself part of the furniture and he’s got the I’ll do whatever I want Mowbray esque bulletproof swagger. If England managers had a genuine belief they’re only a couple of games from the sack it’d cut out a lot of “tactical” nonsense and they’d be better for it.

In France 98 Tunisia sacked Henryk Kasperczak mid tournament after losing to us and his replacement took over for their final game vs Romania. I’ve not given up hope Southgate won’t be allowed to waste another chance of silverware.

100% the one change will be Gallagher for TAA.
