Very fair point, and it's possible we could have got more, but Birmingham were wise/capable enough to reject advances in January and wait to the end of the season, I believe, before selling him. Despite the lowly league finish and being a teenager in his breakout season, he won Championship Apprentice of the Year and EFL Young Player of the Season. He was then sold for a reported 25 million with possible add-ons, as a seventeen year-old.

Because of the smaller sell on percentage for Bellingham , it looks highly likely that, as and when Wharton is sold, we'll receive more for Wharton than Brum did for Bellingham.

Bossing the stats, and chances created = double. And yet he sat on the bench whilst Kobbie laboured to make chances when we desperately needed them:

Very convincing stats - and comparing the two does remind me that Wharton need not have been considered a Rice back-up but could've been played in a slightly more attacking role. On the most important statistics from last year, it was fairly close - Mainoo had 3 goals and 1 assist and Wharton had 0 goals and 3 assists, which reflects their slightly different midfield roles. To Mainoo's big credit, he did 'only' have a MOM performance in the FA Cup final against the eventual league champions.

Whilst Wharton would probably have made an impact for England, ultimately, I don't think it was personnel that was England's downfall. Most probably, his incisive passes would only have been recycled back to him as the likes of Kane, Saka and Bellingham played at walking pace.

Moreover, Mainoo was impressive, especially, when briefly given a platform to play and run with the ball, in the first half against Netherlands. He also made a good impact when he came on for Gallagher at half-time in one of the god-awful performances that are already blurring into one. If anything, Wharton could've played alongside Mainoo and Rice.

Lee Carsley already needs fucking off, no Wharton in his first squad.

Are you really surprised? He's still fairly unproven at the top level and there is plenty of competition for places.

It was surprising to see him make the Euros squad. It isn't surprising to see him not make this squad.

Also Carsley loves Angel Gomes, think he was an ever present when he managed the U21s.

I watch a lot of football and like to think I'm across most of it but I have never heard of Angel Gomes.

Ligue 1 doesn't get a lot of international attention, especially now that PSG have lost a lot of star power, but he's very well known in France and part of a good Lille side.

Gomes, Gallagher, Manoo, all of a muchness, Wharton is different.

None of those players are similar. Gomes is very different to Gallagher and Mainoo.

None of them can do what Wharton can do.

That’s it for me as far as Carsley is concerned. No Wharton in the squad tells me Carsley hasn’t a clue.

Carsley will play attacking football and on the front foot. That's his style

I think you will see a midfield 3 of Palmer, Rice and Foden with Saka right, Kane up front and Gordon left on Saturday against ROI

That might work against a poor Eire team but he’ll get hammered with that sort of line up against a good team. Nobody to play the ball winning Rice role apart from Rice. and if he gets injured nobody at all. Of course if he’d have picked Wharton he would have had back up.

He might adapt it in we play a better team but in qualifying group they will play 4-3-3 and attacking football.

Isn't Gomes the Rice's back up? I don't know anything about Gomes, I had to google him

Gomes is so good he's been stuck in France for 4 years without any prem clubs looking at him and half of England has never heard of him,I'm betting Wharton finishes his career with more England caps.

Press resistant and plays through the lines. Love the new jargon.

Its ok because these games are just unwanted, pointless nations league games against poor opposition, so it doesnt really matter who plays. I suspect many will pull out as this international break is an inconvience to everyone. But there is no logic to Wharton not playing, and Carsley has just stuck half of his old under 21 team in the squad.

Take Morgan Gibbs White for example. Good player, but is there any need when we have Foden, Palmer and Eze?
