Just back.

Absolutely no width - each time the ball got to either side, 9 times out of 10 it was cut back and go onto the stronger foot. Crying out for either proper wingers or proper sided fullbacks who overlap. With the side tonight though there was neither. It was all too predictable at times.

First half was dire, last 40 minutes much better but lacked anything up front.

Wasn't impressed with Tronstad. Yes he kept trying a shot but none looked like going in. Gave the ball away in dangerous positions with sloppy passes. The lad who came on for him Charlie Weston looked better though he was a different type of player popping up all over. Thought he stood out more than when I've seen Jake Garrett.

Szmodics probably the best player - seemed most things went through him when he turned it on.

Defence is sound with JRC, Carter, Hyam. Brittain not the answer at left back if we're not playing a left footer in front of him.

Gallagher was Gallagher - a lot of running, had a header saved very well and hit the post but he's too much of a 'nearly' man. I'd love him to hit 20 goals this season but more often than not we see he's the wrong side of those fine margins.

From that starting XI I see Kaminski, JRC, Carter, Hyam, Szmodics as good enough to be regulars in a top 6 side. Add in Adam Wharton, possibly Pickering but for me we're still nearly half a side away.

Good assessment, only couple of points I’d disagree with.

I thought Brittain did well and was one of the few attacking bright sparks, if anything he was constantly hampered by Dolans inability to beat anyone or even create space through movement.

I thought Tronstad grew into the game, he played a couple of horror passes early on that he was lucky to get away with but once he’d settled looked decent. I agree though and thought Charlie Weston looked a lovely footballer in the 10 minutes he had.

No Adam Wharton, Ash Phillips, Pickering, Sigurddson or Ennis all weekend.

Good challenge against a Barnsley outfit which went really strongly at the end of last season in L1.

That said, I thought Fleetwood were extremely well organised having watched back the whole game on Rovers TV. They went from being in the relegation places to 13th in the second half of last season so are no mugs and I wouldn't be surprised to see them top half of L1 on that showing.

If I were JDT I'd be happy with Trav coming back strongly, Tronstad neat and reliable, JRC and Szmodics showing well, the Carter/Hyam combination and overall neat possession football with the ball moving quicker between Rovers players than was usual last season.

Good base for injecting the existing absent players into but crying out for real menace when the ball gets into the final third.

15’ #Rovers 0-0 #Barnsley Brilliant from Markanday, who beats his man and cuts the ball back from the byline to Batty, whose goal-bound shot is blocked by a Barnsley defender. #ROVvBAR https://abs-0.twimg.com/emoji/v2/svg/1f535.svghttps://abs-0.twimg.com/emoji/v2/svg/26aa.svg

11’ #Rovers 0-0 #Barnsley Excellent recovery challenge from Barnes to deny the Barnsley forward.

At least we appear to be defensively solid…

Against L1 opposition, yes. But we also can't score against L1 opposition. Not much solace there.

It's only pre-season I know, but I'm refusing to take any positives just because the club is such a mess! 😉

Watched the highlights from yesterday, looks like we created more than enough to win it comfortably, but we all know what the problem is.

Sounds like Markanday having a decent game today, really hope he gets a chance to shine this season. When he played last season he looked at least as good as Dolan but has been so unfortunate.
