NeilInBristol
Tony Mowbray says the situation at Sunderland is “complicated” as several experienced players consider their futures, including Danny Batth. Rovers hold interest in the centre-back who won the Player of the Season award at the Stadium of Light last term. Think it will happen?? philipl
Almost more intriguing than the Batth saga with Rovers is what on earth is going on at Sunderland. Even with Mowbray in charge they were well set to go on a promotion push but the club seems to have imploded. Whatever has Dack put in their tea? When we're playing Luton away, I would prefer Danny Batth right in the middle there, heading the ball out of the box. “But if you get to an impasse where there isn't a new contract offer that's suitable, and we're seeing what else out there. Indeed, we saw it here with Mowbray here as well. There was always a player able to bring a spark or a goal out of very little. Dack primarily, but also Armstrong and later on BBD. Current Dack probably isn't going to be that player for Sunderland, and I'm not sure they have any others who can consistently step up in that role. The younger Bellingham is their best bet, but it's a lot of pressure on a 17 year old to consistently deliver in that fashion.

NeilInBristol
So Sunderland won't pay his wages. He has a year left on his contract. Why don't we just get him for free next year?

If we are looking for frees and loans to save money why are we buying a 32 yr old who will be free soon anyway may as well spend that money on a player with experience and then get him for free next year

Shouldn't really need explaining should it, otherwise they'd be looking elsewhere but there are obvious reasons why they want him now and might pay a small amount to get him in. Anything can happen in 6 months time it's a long time in football and he's no use to us frozen out at Sunderland. Or loaned elsewhere then they decide to offer him more brass. Why don't we just get him for free next year? Probably the whole reason this has dragged out. Sunderland hierarchy are happy/willing for Baath to go, who apparently only triggered an option year on his contract through appearances (as part of being their POTY). They've replaced him with a couple younger CBs (assets) and Baath is probably on a relatively pricey contract too. Rovers are scouring for an experienced CB to replace Ayala, but we're on a tight budget. Baath looks like a good target to pick off without a transfer fee (rather than resort to decrepit 'free' CBs a la Greer/Brown). Maybe sign him at 10k/week for 2 years, so a ~1m total outlay, but avoid an upfront fee. Mowbray probably kicked up a fuss about giving away an experienced POTY CB, so the Sunderland hierarchy decided to start angling for a fee (£500k-1m?). Baath has probably been pushing for the move to secure himself another contract and it looks like he's out of their starting 11 now too. GB may literally have zero budget for a transfer fee and/or Venky's and co. have argued against/disallowed fees for 30+ players. So, we said no thanks and started looking into fallbacks, like Sykes (who Venky's may be willing to sanction a fee for given he's 24 and could have resale value). Now, Barnes is out long-term, so we definitely need a CB, and perhaps have now offered something like £200k, while Sunderland is risking paying Baath a decent wage all year to mostly sit on the bench. We're at least avoiding having to start a young CB (like Phillips last year), so we're willing to see this to the deadline. So, who blinks first?

Backroom DE. Posted August 23, 2023 Backroom Share Posted August 23, 2023 The obvious reason is that we need him now, but also there can be a big difference in a year once players get to Batth's age - especially if they aren't playing regularly. Mulgrew's legs were gone by the time we started our first Championship season, having still looked okay at the end of the League 1 season. Batth may still remain on the shortlist as a potential option if we don't sign him and he's released on a free next year, but we may be operating under entirely new circumstances by then.

Think he will get a lot of game time then? We did well when we secured Hyam. Think he will replicate that success?
