Their GK nearly killed a Hungarian player in the box - let's not complain about missed penalty appeals, yeah?

I think that's a strange statement. We don't know how the player is, hope hes okay, but the game continued so people will comment on it.

They don’t like us and we don’t like them but you have to say Scotland were denied a definite penalty. Grant Hanley had a good game

They absolutely detest us, we don't understand their attitude to us.

Lazy journalism.

Hungary set up to hit Scotland on the counter. It worked a treat.

Come to think of it Scotland did have one shot on target, the Hanley effort at the end, but the BBC stats don't recognise it for whatever reason. Oh well. Either way, it was baffling to play this way in a must win game against Hungary. Waited until the last 10 mins to try and then massively overloaded the attack and could have let in two or three if Hungary had more quality. Granted they probably should have had a pen but sometimes it's about making your own luck.

Scotland seemed to have taken notes from England with that slow, ponderous style of play. But at least we normally go a goal up before turning to shit.

For years now the Jocks have taunted England by singing about Argentina and quite a few have taken to wearing Argentina shirts during World Cups. So for me it is really ironic that an Argentinian referee turns down what the majority thought was a stonewall penalty which would probably have seen them go through.

Karma really is a bitch 🤣🤣

Scotland got what they deserve nothing. No threat up front. Clarke picked the wrong formation tonight and the wrong team. Created very little

To be fair to Clarke not sure what else he could do with the players available

Robertson, mcginn and mctominay aside the rest are quite literally championship quality players with most of them playing in the championship. Even those 3 wouldn’t make an England 5th xi. In a way it’s remarkable how well they do with the players they have.

Your right, and what is it about International football where those three you’ve mentioned plus all the players in the England squad, playing their club football at the very highest level, don’t you bring that quality to the International stage. Regardless of dim witted head coaches playing them out of position, they still make poor passes, poor first touches and wrong tactical decisions.

Robertson is better than any left back we have in Germany

Go 4-2-3-1. Actually attack them

I would have played Christie on the right and Armstrong on the left. McGinn next to Gilmour. McTominay as the 10

The sum is always greater than the component parts. With England it is always the reverse. That’s across different eras and managers. It’s very frustrating

I would say we broadly tend to overrate our players. For example Gascoigne - great player but won very little in the game. Compare Gerrards trophy cabinet to say Zidanes...

Same thing now really. We've got a lot of very good attacking players, but if push came to shove how many of them would get into a France or Spain XI? 2 or 3.

We're a good team but not as good as France who are obviously the best squad. And about as good as four or five other teams. Statistically we have around a 10-15% chance of winning it I'd say. France maybe 20%. Yet the idea will propound on absolutely no evidence that we should win it... Madness.

Disappointing for Scotland. I think their clubs’ readiness to import so many average standard overseas players can’t help their national team. Though, it can equally be argued that they do that due to shortage of talent coming through.

They were without Hickey and Ferguson, mind you.

Another difficulty for Scotland and others is the shift to possession football across the board. Direct football, for all its criticisms, could be an equaliser - not just route one but consider how Damien Duff’s Ireland did that World Cup with direct running with the ball.

Possession football definitely helps at international level and there’s no going back but I wonder if northern Europe is giving up too much of their style and strengths to match the style that southern Europe plays?

Ironically, Spain, the archetypal possession team, are playing a more direct game with wingers this tournament, and looking promising.

Even the Brazilian national team are playing more direct European style. The days of the samba are definitely gone. More pragmatic.

Haven't Brazil been quite pragmatic since at least the 90s now?

They can’t really complain. Three games, 2 goals,  one an own goal and the other a really massive deflection on a shot going right down the keepers throat. I thought Hungary were really poor. They played like a team that was already through instead of a team desperate for a win.

The Scots just aren’t producing the players anymore. It’s interesting to see that the England team has lots of players with immigrant backgrounds, as have most Western European teams, whilst the Scots don’t appear to have any.
