This, given we’re about to enter the coldest/darkest/wettest period of the year where grass doesn’t grow the pitch could be ruined for the remainder of the season playing today. Even with the stitched pitch, I think it’s a good decision to call today off to preserve the pitch.

Very good points made. I know of several fans who stop attending around 2013/14 and haven't come back and won't. They lost their Rovers passion and some interest in football. Cost isn't a factor tho. 

It's all depends who the new owners are and what's their first action are.

I would think the pitch drains into the river if that is up high i would think it will affect the drainage of the pitch, other local ground would not have this problem some local games off in preston.

I'm 10 miles down the road from Ewood and it hasn't snowed at all here. My house also isn't at the bottom of a valley next to a river like the ground is.

Until they sort the drainage down there these things will always happen.

Depending on pitch coverings or not they've had snow and ice on it then that melts followed by torrential rain means double the normal water to drain away.

The drain into the river remain the issue when the river level is high.

Yep, the aforementioned PNE game destroyed the pitch for a good while and the game itself was basically unwatchable.

As things stand, we are the only game off in the championship today. Unbelievable - we apparently have a thermoclime that means our drainage is less effective than any other professional football club in the region... I don't think so! 😞

Bolton and Preston going ahead down the road. This rainfall has been forecast since early in the week so competent clubs were prepared. Unfortunately the men in charge are incompetent chancers*.

Looking at a brook in Tockholes, which is a raging torrent at present, I think the points about the pitch drains at Ewood not being able to feed into the R. Darwen are very valid.

Yes, that’s always been the problem.

It used to be worse in the 80s and any band of rain before a game often led to a postponement.

Now it has to be quite severe.

I think the incompetence claims are really disrespectful to ground staff who work tirelessly on the pitch in all weathers  and clearly take pride in their work. 
 
We’re in a valley, next to a river. Covers or otherwise don’t solve the problem of an excess of water needing somewhere to drain, a full river doesn’t provide this.

I have gained a couple of quid, by not having to catch a bus, but I have lost on my pre-bought train tickets. "It never rains, but it pours". Worse things happen at sea.

I'm not entirely sure what the ruling is now but it definitely used to be that the police needed four hours notice of an postponed otherwise they would have to be paid. Also food will have been ordered for hospitality and the concourses, stewards and other staff will have to be paid and ticket money refunded to lots of Rovers and Portsmouth fans who won't be able to make a night game. It's turned into an expensive day for Rovers and although there are no guarantees surely covering the pitch would have given the game going ahead a better chance.

we have always had drainage problems due to the location of the ground pretty sure apart from spending millions on a drainage system there is nothing that can be done , and i cant see it being worth it for the odd game every couple of years .
