v Luton Town (h) - 14/12/2024

Recommended Posts

Really good first half performance, not so good second half. We stopped respecting possession and started being too clever on the ball.

Scores -

Peers, 7, he had good game today. For all Luton’s huff and puff he didn’t have a lot to do apart from that double save.

JRC, 7, steady performance. Didn’t do much wrong and he got forward well in the first half.

Hyam, 8, rocky steady and back to the form that got him into the Scotland squad.

Batth, 8, what a difference he’s made. Stood up to Luton’s big guys all game.

Pickering, 7,  did pretty well after that early booking. Unlucky with the back heel.

ACD, 7, great first half, vanished in the second half.

Travis, 9, played like a real captain today. He’s our talisman. The beating heart of the team.

Tronstad, 8, the blotting paper man, just soaks everything up.

Beck, 7, got forward well for the goal in what is not his best position.

Ohashi, 8,  never stopped running, made the Beck goal and caused the Luton red

Gueye, 7, a really strange player. Missed an absolute sitter of a chance but generally played quite well. He’s alway playing on the edge. Goes offside too easily and gets wound up too easily.

Subs

Hedges, 6, hardly in the game for the last 15-20 minutes
Buckley 6, ditto.

Leanard,  6, missed a good chance right at the death.

I wasn’t impressed with the ref. There was one bad tackle in the whole game and how many players did he book ?

Thinking about a man of the match and yet again I am struggling to see past Tronstad yet again. He completely ran the midfield for the umpteenth time. I think he made one error towards the end of the game.

He’s MotM every week. It’s just that it has to be given to others occasionally to keep Rev happy.

I have to question anybody's knowledge of football if they can't see what Tronstad brings to the team. He is fundamental to the way we play and his defensive diligence cannot be understated in the last five games when we haven't conceded a goal.

Unless the poster is trying to wind others up.

Rev’s got to have a go at somebody now Gally’s gone.

Travis for mine. Ran his blood to water today.

LOL. You should be where I sit -any opposition player goes near a Rovers player and it's 'book him'.

Any Rovers player kills an opposition player and it's 'never touched him, book him for diving, get up you soft twat.'

😄

It simply has to be a wind up.

Tronstad oozes class and his first half performance was as perfect for that role, as anything anyone will see this weekend.

Compliments to the manager and players for a good solid win. Good selection with more attacking threat.

After a low key start when neither side looked to be doing too much other than keep in their shape, it ended up quite entertaining (always good when you win.) Got the goals and did the necessary in the second half to keep a good clean sheet.

ACD added that extra pace and threat on the right (as well as a nicely taken goal), Beck to a lesser extent on the left. Makhtar hustled and did enough to keep them occupied as well as providing a basic outlet (should have scored though- good job Beck was following up to place it home.)

Irritations? Buckley coming on and on the break, having the chance to play a simple ball to keep the move going, held on too long and then cried like an entitled girl when he didn’t get the free kick. Baath (who otherwise had a great defensive game) playing a suicide ball out from the back that nearly cost us a goal. Pears, who made 2 great stops and was otherwise sound, dithered on 2 clearances and their forward almost closed him down.

Tronstad? Give it up Rev J

This is just embarrassing now 😂

He put in a solid professional holding midfielder performance today in both halves. Broke up play and got us going again. As he does most weeks. There was only once I remember him giving it away

This is true, its getting embarrassing from @RevidgeBlue

Tronstad has shown his worth to this team and why he is fan favourite

Kudos to Eustace after another really satisfying win where we put ourselves in such a strong position after a very impressive first half performance.

Pears made a good double save and the defence again was rock solid in dealing with top strikers at this level. The midfield 2 are a real strength with Tronstad as good as anyone on the pitch and Travis really complimenting him nicely.

The performance of ACD was as big a positive as any. Just to see a player who is fairly quick and direct gives us a totally different dimension to the likes of Hedges trudging up and down, and his goal was a brilliant finish. Beck again was really good too and Ohashi worked hard and is better suited playing just off a striker.

Gueye is a conundrum. His overall performance was the best by far that he has put in in terms of his hold up etc, his work for the first goal typifies what he was offering. But strikers need to score goals and he is as bad a finisher as I can ever remember, that miss was embarassing and he also slashed wildly at one in the second half.

Obviously the game had a feel of going through the motions when Buckley came on but he doesnt look anywhere near the level he needs to be at whenever he features. Surprised Baker didnt come on, maybe it was just to keep Buckley happy.

Regarding ACD, I’m still not a fan of predominently left footed players out on the right. They want to come inside all the time and it compresses play. ACD reminded me a bit of Scott Sellars but Scotty played on his correct wing.

I thought his 2nd-half shot wasn't half-bad; a little wide but with good pace.  It would have been a well remembered doozy had it snuck in.

Think 7 is harsh on Gueye. Won every single ball that went his way, and had a great touch throughout. Superb for the opening goal as well.

The only fault I can give him is his ‘assist’.

I used to dream that Gallagher would ever put in that type of performance

Far better match than Ohashi - who hasn’t looked up to much in a long while IMO.

I think it was to give Eustace a look at Buckley.

We were 2-0 up, they were down to 10 and he was played in the 10 position (so really couldn't hurt us defensively).

I suspect if we had assurances that the money was to be reinvested we'd move him on in January.

Ohashi put the ball on a plate for big Mak for his second “ assist “.

Another terrific performance and the team and management staff should be very proud. Things won’t always fall our way this season but I’m sure they will keep grounded.

After our last 5 results, this was the one I was most concerned about pre-Match. They were due a good result with several players who stood up well in the Premier League last season. How wrong I was. They hardly pressed, looked lethargic and are certainly suffering from a Premier League relegation hangover.

It’s positive to see we now have a squad, with several still to come back, where we can make a few changes and everyone coming in knows their job.

Im hoping the club get their act together and back the manager this window because he is getting 110% out of this squad of players and deserves it.

Winning football and clean sheets every day of the week beats tippy tappy, so called ‘easy on the eye’ football for me.

That line-up looked almost straight-up 4-4-2 on paper, albeit ACD drifting in and, perhaps, Ohashi dropping. A sign of the times?

I have my own statto today, I cannot remember watching  Rovers beat Luton at home since Noel Brotherston scored a wonder goal on Ewood ice in 1977...A bogey side for Rovers in the 80s...

Indeed, our record at Kenilworth Road is absolutely shocking.

Surprising lineup today, but some astute tactical changes made by Eustace. Didn't change our strategy when Luton went one down and we stayed professional and saw the game out. Five clean sheets from our six straight wins. Brilliant. Travis MotM? Didn't take care of the ball well enough but was everywhere defensively.
