I feel sorry for the players and the manager tonight.  A 46 game Championship requires a decent sized squad to enable players to be rotated and rested.  The teams around us have those squads.  We are asking to same handful of players to turn out all the time.  It's not surprising that their bodies are now showing the strain.   They are human beings not robots.  Some of the players are struggling for form, some are struggling with the standard required in the Championship.  I can't fault them for effort but to succeed at this level you need a little more.  We have the effort and organisation but we are lacking in quality in certain areas.

Unfortunately, that little bit of quality costs money and that seems to be something we don't have - despite claims to the contrary.  I'm travelling to Bristol on Saturday and dread to think what sort of team we will be able to assemble from the walking wounded.  We needed to start bringing quality in at the start of January.  We didn't and winnable games have been lost.  I fully expect us to drop out of the race for the play-offs unless something remarkable happens in the next couple of weeks.  Sadly, I don't expect that to happen and another season will drift by with us being further away from the top flight than ever before.

If you’re going, take your boots, you might get a game.

Thats us playing well?

We created some good chances first and second half, got down the wings and created things from open play.

Gueye was very good, winning headers, overall play improving, had a few good chances, need to cross the ball more for him.

Hit with 3 more injuries.

Coventry didn't play us the park all this quality they have.

More worried about the team we have on Saturday against Bristol City

(A) He's under contract so they would have to buy out his contract; (B) looking at those clubs over the last few years are they really a step up ?

He's only on a 2 year deal isn't he? Not insurmountable for these clubs. I wouldn't imagine he's on silly money either.

And I wouldn't say so but if he feels he's been poorly treated he might decide to take one. Imagine Derby have a few quid to spend. And they were just 3 examples, who knows what is around the corner? Even if he doesn't take a job, why treat him like shite? We saw what happened with JDT, he downed tools. I don't see that from Eustace but even marginal drops in passion and enthusiasm can feed down to the players and impact performance.

My point is - we should be backing him and rewarding him for his good work so far. Not dragging our feet, wasting valuable points as the injuries mount and not delivering the players he is mentioning (in less subtle terms) in each passing interview.

Derby have no money according to my old flatmate who is a life long fan and season ticket holder. They played their playmaker at right back tonight apparently.

Most would agree. Where’s the desire to do that from the fan base though? The only supporters group with any profile sees them as a ‘friend’. It’s bizarre really.

I think you will find that the term 'critical friend' is referring to the club not the owners. Not bizarre at all.

Quite the centre forward performance from Gueye, replicate that more often than not and he can be a real asset. It's almost as if a good coach has been working on him.

The limitations are obvious and have been well discussed, as my mate said tonight, by the time we get the players back from injury, it will be too late.

A blind man can see that reinforcements are needed. But they have to be better than what we’ve already got or there’s no progression. Unfortunately these owners and the CEO only plan from one window to the next and there is zero ambition to progress, in fact they’ve consistently shown they actively avoid it.

I honestly believe the owners don’t plan anything.

That's reassuring at least. Maybe they've learned from previous boom and bust years.

I think you are right that he is under contract to the end of next season - presumably on a salary of £700k-£800k pa ? Right now that would cost over £1.3m to buy out which is still a fair bit for the Derby's and Swansea's of this world.

You're probably right. Think we dodged a bullet with West Brom (maybe a different story if later in window). Thankfully can't see any of the other realistic teams being in the market soon.

Yes.

His current club is ACTIVELY working against him right now.

We could be getting close to challenging this bench from 2 Dec 2023: https://www.skysports.com/football/sheffield-wednesday-vs-blackburn-rovers/teams/484926: Hilton, Gamble, Markanday, Garrett, Atcheson, Telalovic, Bloxham, Montgomery, Duru. (Leonard aside - not to pick on him - at least had a semblance of a starting XI)

(JDT obviously deserves some criticism, but he had almost zero depth to work with in the latter stages...)

Couldn't have been that great a performance, we didn't fucking score!

It genuinely was. 3 genuine worldie saves stopped him having a hat trick.
