Doran had played in the Republic of Irelands’ age group sides before joining the Rovers at the age of sixteen. He made such rapid progress with the trainees that he began to be added to the reserve squads by the turn of the year. He was introduced to the first team on the right wing but appeared to lose his way and was identified by Sam Allardyce as one of the young players who had not developed. A move to Scotland established him in the game and brought him a Scottish Cup winners’ medal. However he missed the following season with a knee injury.
