Regarded by many critics as a potentially great player, Bowman never lived up to expectations. A thick set man he was mobile and played with intelligence and had one of the most powerful long range shots in the game. Although respected in the game he was never popular with the crowd because of his reluctance to chase round the field. They may have had a point because he had put on a stone and a half by the time he left for Brentford. He later returned to Blackburn and was licensee at a variety of public houses, the Lord Nelson Hotel in Salford, Blackburn, the Mill Hill Hotel, the Toll Bar Inn on Whalley Old Road, the Clarence Hotel on Lord Street and finally from 1919 to 1934 the Cemetery Hotel.
