The son of a grocer he was spotted playing for Doncaster Boys and became a member of the ground staff at Ewood. Along with Bryan Douglas he was regarded as the most promising of all the club's juniors but an early debut was traumatic. A knee injury forced him out of the Football League and he was playing in the Yorkshire League at Abbeydale Park when he collapsed and died. It was his first game back following a Christmas knee injury and he had only had the chance for a few hours sleep after working the night shift.
