A stocky inside forward who had struggled at Sunderland he made progress with the reserves and scored frequently. Despite his opportunism he did not adjust to the greater pace of the first team and joined Wigan, helping them gain admission to the Football League. In 1986 he played at Wembley when he came off the bench in the final of the FA Trophy. In all he made over 250 appearances in the Football Alliance with three clubs. He received a serious knee injury which kept him out of the game but he attempted to come back with Warrington before doctors advised him to retire. Blackburn continued to be his home and he worked locally as a driver.
