Clough's father, who had been a noted local footballer, was a partner in the architects Rowbottom and Hall. The family lived in Accrington for a time before returning to live in Riley Street. The only member of the town's 1913 schoolboy side to make it to the Football League he was given an early debut when Dennis and Duckworth were injured. Returned to the reserves he was played on the left wing and immediately scored a hat trick but was allowed to join Blackpool. A similar lack of opportunities brought him back into Lancashire junior football where he was a stalwart for some time. He lived most of his life in Whitebirk Road and worked at Greenbank Gas Works until eighteen months before his death in Queens Park Hospital. He was well known in Blackburn for his swimming prowess.
