An artist in the Southern League the Rovers stepped in when the FA commission reduced his transfer fee from £60. They got so little use from him that they regretted their inclination to snap up a bargain. Back in the south he shone, winning a Southern League championship medal with Bristol Rovers and he returned north for a moderately successful season with Blackpool. He was a good batsman with his home town club, Earl’s Barton. His father Abel worked as a shoe clicker and the majority of his sons, including Albert, worked in the same occupation. When he retired from football he became a publican, keeping The Old House, at Home in Northampton for 42 years. His elder brother Fred played for Rushden, Earl's Barton, Kettering Town and Northampton Town and appeared for the latter in the 1909 Charity Shield.
