Albert Crook was the son of an engine tender in a local mill and grew up in Wood Street, Darwen. He started work in the local paper mill and after playing with the works team began playing with the best junior teams in the area. This led Darwen to play him in the Football League and he ended as top scorer. However finances were poor and a move to Stalybridge was more rewarding. The Rovers noted his form and took him on but he was never permitted a long run because of team changes and injuries he suffered. Sturdily built and a grafter he was in fine form with the reserves but moved back to Stalybridge to obtain first team football. He helped them to the Lancashire League title and back home helped Darwen to the same title and the East Lancashire Charity Cup, scoring 24 goals in the 1903/04 season. For a time he worked as an insurance agent in Clayton le Moors but he lived the last years of his life in Woodville Terrace, Darwen.
