A man so desperate to succeed that he walked from Yorkshire for a trial at Torquay he became a brief scoring sensation in Devon but Birmingham were unimpressed and let him go cheaply. He was then a right winger but Bob Compton recruited him to play inside forward and was grateful to sign him. He proved a natural predator able to score with either foot or his head and he helped drive the club to promotion. When war commenced he returned to his Torquay home, guesting for Torquay, Cardiff and Newport. Tragically he died in action serving with the Devon Regiment on the beach at Normandy.
