The son of Ben Barton , a cotton manufacturer who married a Blackburn girl and set up in business in the town, Alf Barton worked as a tapesizer at Roe Lee Mill, living in the St Silas area after he married. He was used by the Rovers as a utility forward and seldom played consecutive matches. Although he liked to play inside he was often used on the left wing. In his three cup games he twice scored hat tricks, although as in each game the club scored eleven the feat went unnoticed. For many years he lived in Leamington Road and became a good bowler, who won the East Lancashire championship in 1930.
