Dawson was winding down an illustrious career that had seen him appear in nine cup finals in Scotland when he was signed in a hurry by the Rovers when Glen Keeley suddenly left for Oldham. Although he had a reputation as a calm, reliable defender who could play at both full back or in the centre his Ewood days started with a carry over suspension about which the club was caught unawares and then punctuated by frequent absence for attention to knee injuries. By this time his mobility was suspect although there was never a doubt about his positional sense or authority. Released because he was seldom able to play for regular spells he played briefly for Airdrie before being player-manager of St Andrew's in Malta. Later he was assistant manager at Ayr United and then manager of Hamilton Academicals for three years. After a spell coaching at Stranraer, he coached Street League, Scotland and his team reached the semi-final of the world cup for homeless people in 2003 and to victories in 2007 and 2011. He was still in charge of the team in 2017.
