The product of a school that produced internationals Lescott and Sturridge, Bell made slow progress with Birmingham and was frequently loaned out so that he could achieve first team football. A move to Fleetwood brought a regular position and a hand in helping the club gain promotion to League Division One. Although nominally a left back he played in many hybrid positions for the club being used as a wing-back and a player capable of playing both roles in the same game. At Blackburn he has settled into the left back position although occasionally he is pushed forward to play as a wing back.
