The son of a club scout he qualified to play for the Northern Ireland Under 21 team because of his parentage. He was a strong, bustling striker who found difficulty adjusting to the pace of the first team game. Exposure to league football tempted him to turn down a contract offer and leave for Blackpool but the move proved disastrous and he ended playing non-league football. At Castleton he enjoyed some managerial experience although only on a temporary basis. He is one of only two players who represented the club in the FA Youth Cup in four different seasons.
