Born in Billington his family moved to Mellor Brow before his second birthday and Art followed his father into the cotton mills although the father subsequently became landlord of the Windmill Inn and then the Eagle Inn, both in Mellor. Arthur was signed by the Rovers but spent most of the next three years playing for local junior clubs until he received an offer from Wellingborough. He soon returned north recuperating from an ankle injury and rejoined the Rovers at a time when his younger brother, Fred, was starting to play with the first team. He was given his debut and was even selected as a reserve for the Football League against the Irish League. He played well on the last day of the 1899/1900 season, so much so that a representative from Southampton tailed him home and offered him £1 a week more than the Rovers were paying. He was reluctant to leave but the Rovers would not match the offer and because he was out of work and renovating a church as a voluntary worker, financial necessities forced him to move south. He was a huge success with his new club but an ankle injury hindered his appearances. A year later he was back at Ewood but broke his leg in his second game and was forced to retire. He became a coach in Rotterdam and returning to England he bought a herbalists in Rishton.
