    Summary

Born and raised in Glasgow and a member of the Rangers from the age of eight, Ferguson followed his brother into the Rangers first team. A complete "box to box" midfield player with great athleticism and a natural leader he was well on his way into becoming a legendary figure at Ibrox when he decided that he wished to play in the Premiership. Despite the fact that he was captain of his country and had won every honour the Scottish game had to offer, he relished a stiffer challenge and in August 2003 decided to follow his old team mate Amoruso to Ewood. His transition to English football was difficult and he was only just getting used to the extra pace of the game when a broken knee cap kept him out for half a season. Returning to the side he was given the captaincy but the decision of Souness to join Newcastle prompted Ferguson to think of returning to Rangers. By the winter transfer window he was sufficiently unsettled to ask for a transfer and having achieved little in his time at Ewood the Rovers consented. Although he quickly returned to form in Glasgow he continued to cut a controversial figure and his head to head confrontation with the manager Paul Le Guen, contributed to the departure of the latter. His reputation as one of the greats of the club was drastically resigned in 2009, when a late night drinking session before a vital World Cup qualifying game, and subsequent ill judged responses, led to him being banned from representing his country and being stripped from the Rangers’ captaincy. He ended his playing career at Blackpool where in 2014 he was appointed  care-taker manager. Although he guided the club out of the relegation zone he was not offered the job permanently. In June he became the player-manager at Clyde but he resigned in February 2017.
