Born in Bankstown he was raised in Macquerie Fields where his sporting prowess was visible from an early age. At the age of ten he was taken to the New South Wales Academy of Sport where his natural athleticism was channeled into football. At the age of fifteen he accompanied Harry Kewell for trials with Leeds United but returned to Australia to join the Australian Institute of Sport. From there he graduated to Sydney Olympic and saw national exposure with the Australian Olympic Games' team. Full international caps followed and he joined the flood of young Australians who were coming into European football. He joined Feyenoord and contributed to their UEFA cup final victory in 2002, although he missed the final because of suspension. A player at home wide on the right hand side and able to operate as a right wing back he had speed and deceptive trickery. Anxious to move into the Premiership he almost joined Newcastle but the deal fell through at the last moment and he ended joining Blackburn at a fee that recognised he had only a year of his contract remaining. In his first two seasons at Ewood he remained an enigma, capable of brilliance but often disappointing with his final execution. However he was a vital outlet for the defence and a non stop worker with a high tackle count. On the continent he had always played as a wing back and in 2006 he moved from his position as a wide right midfielder and moved to right back. Although this appeared to be his best position the Rovers’ managers appeared less convinced about this and he spent most of his time playing wide right or even centre midfield. After eight years at the club he decided to return to Australia, the club waiving the right to a fee in recognition of his conspicuous service. He retired from the game three years later as a consequence of persistent back trouble.
