As a youngster he opted to join Montpellier rather than his home club Marseilles because his parents believed the club had better educational facilities. Although he quickly became a first team player and played for the French Under 21s, he could not hold his place and joined the Rovers in the January 2014 transfer window in order to widen his experience. He proved a raw talent and although frequently on the bench he never played for the first team. Back in Montpellier he gained a regular place and improved so dramatically that two years later the scouts of Everton and Swansea City were watching him regularly and he signed for Saint-Etienne for a large fee. He moved to Italy for more than double that amount and gained international honours. The son of a Burkinabé and a Malian mother he was selected for both national teams but elected to play for the land of his father.
