    Summary

After failing to make the grade with Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle Conlon looked destined to Play non-league football until the Darlington coach, Jack Watson, remembered seeing him play for Newcastle’s junior sides. He made his debut for Darlington reserves, without being registered and playing under the name of an airman from Middleton St George’s. His potential attracted Darlington and they signed  a man who scored 27 goals in 70 appearances. He had served several clubs before he came to the Rovers, his virtues being his honesty and effort. Like so many transfers at the club around this period the deal revolved not so much about who was coming in but who was leaving in exchange, in this case  the talented but inconsistent Darling. Conlon removed the uncertainty but he was never a prolific scorer and was even moved back to play centre back when the club had problems. After over a decade of wandering he returned to the hometown he always had loved and made his debut for the local club at the age of 31. He remained in Shildon for the rest of his life, dying in 2000 after a long illness.
