Signed to add authority to the team and appointed club captain, he proved to be no more than an average utility player whose appearances were limited by cartilage trouble that prompted his release. An inside forward at school he was converted to wing half at Birmingham for whom he made over one hundred appearances. Injury cost him his place and he was playing inside forward in the reserves when the Rovers signed him. It was intended that he would play left half but injuries forced him to alternate between the half back and forward lines. A transfer to Swansea was negotiated but Calladine preferred to join Guildford, costing the Rovers a transfer fee and Calladine himself the accrued share of his benefit. H was born in a small Derbyshire village where his father was a miner.
