Binns was born in Cowling near Keighley but was brought up in nearby Sutton in Craven. A classy goalkeeper with safe hands he became a regular when signed from Halifax and gave great satisfaction until the emergence of the potentially brilliant Billy Gormlie. When Gormlie's roller coaster career was blighted by injury the Rovers moved quickly to bring Binns back from exile in Workington. A fixture until he was seriously injured in 1936 he left the club suddenly when Barnsley needed a replacement goalkeeper. This move was acknowledged as a mistake because Binns was so brilliant in Yorkshire that the Rovers tried to buy him back. When the war started he worked as a surface worker at a colliery in Barnsley. In the war years he played for Halifax, Leeds, Lincoln and Carlisle before returning to his poultry farm in Portsmouth, near Todmorden.
