The stocky, aggressive midfield man was identified by Souness as having the attitude and desire to play League football. Tough in the tackle and a leader and organiser he found chances few and far between but was loaned out frequently to increase his chances. Many clubs have benefited from his ideal approach but his permanent move to York City saw him present when they dropped out of the Football League. One of the few players retained in their Conference debut Dunning has laboured hard for the club in adverse circumstances. In March 2005 he was called up to the England Futsal squad for the international tournament in France. In the summer of 2006 he declined a new contract with York and signed part time terms with Harrogate so that he could train as a plumber.
