The brother in law of Gerry Francis, Byrne was a right wing flyer who broke into the Football League late in his career. He was at his peak with Millwall and it was from there that he came to Ewood on loan. It was thought that he added some pace and attacking options in his games for Blackburn but funds were scarce and Don Mackay waited until the expiration of the loan period before making a decision. He was then beaten to the punch by Plymouth, who had opposed him when they played the Rovers. Ironically three years later Mackay took the player on loan again, this time for Fulham. Byrne's long career was studded with oddities, he scored with his last kick for Watford and he was taken on as a non contract player by Tottenham to play in the Inter Toto Cup. He ended his playing days as player coach of Albion Rover and had a few games with Armadale . Returning to live in the west country he held a number of coaching roles with Torquay, Plymouth Argyle ,Swindon Town and Yeovil.
