Originally an inside forward he played 53 league games for Newcastle and was reserve for both England and the Football League and played for the North-Eastern League, but never imposed his presence on the team. Signed by the Rovers to cover centre half Frank Reilly, he took the shirt off him only to lose it to Harry Healless. Appointed reserve captain he eventually moved to Hull where he made exactly 100 league appearances. He remained in the town, managing four different cinemas, but after retirement went back to the north-east in Bedlington.
