    Summary

Having failed to make the grade as a centre forward at Halifax, Binns was converted to the centre of the defence where he demonstrated that he was calm, composed and solid. Rediscovered at Burnley he could not displace Tommy Cummings but the Rovers admired his play in the reserves so much that they paid a small fee for him with the intention of him taking over immediately from Willie Kelly. Being carried off in the public trial game did not help his cause but as the team without him lost the first two games and conceded five goals it was not a great set back. Particularly when in the next eleven games only twelve goals were conceded and Binns appeared to be the difference. During this time he had looked vulnerable to the fast breaking forwards but he had used his positional sense so well that only Billy Liddell had discomforted him. However his vulnerability was exposed rapidly and in the next 9 games 22 goals were conceded and Kelly returned. In the close season Matt Woods arrived to effectively end Binns' Rovers career. A keen fast bowler  with Burnley CC he later became the steward at the club.
