In the early thirties Ted Davis, the Bath manager, was a trusted scout for the Rovers and the club signed many players recommended by him. One of them was Coombs who was an unusual player for the time, a thoughtful rather than bustling centre forward who needed time to develop after failing with the Bristol clubs. Thrust straight in to first team action because Ted Harper was injured it was obvious that he needed time. He had scored 14 goals for Bath in his first half season and 25 in his second half season but the only goals he obtained for the Rovers were five in eight reserve appearances, all the goals being scored away from home. It was quickly realised that he would not make the grade and he returned to Bath at the end of the season. He joined the Somerset Police in 1936 and was stationed in Yeovil. He was a fine all round cricketer with Writhlington, seldom failing with either bat or ball.
