The son of a rubber worker the family emigrated to Toronto, where Crawley played with a local side that was unbeaten for two years. He returned to live in Paisley and played junior football before joining the Rovers at a young age. Anyone who did not know the man might have thought that he craved notoriety. He was one of the few players to sport a moustache, wore shorts that were baggy even by the standards of the time, was sent off in the Christmas fixture against Preston and was even tried at centre forward. Badly injured on his debut for Lincoln he had a brief spell with Accrington before emigrating to Canada. His fortune changed rapidly and was made captain of the national team and when he retired became coach to the Detroit All Stars.
