Although he was born in a fruit growing hamlet on the outskirts of Gloucester his family moved to Rotherham where he spent much of his childhood. He played right half at Barnsley but inside forward at Huddersfield. Signed by Blackburn he proved a hard, indefatigable runner but lacked spark until moved back to half back. The perfect foil for the artistic Whiteside, he provided the iron that helped the club to promotion in 1939 but never got to play in the First Division. He died in a colliery accident only five minutes from the end of his shift.
