In 1949 the Rovers were desperate for an inside forward and wanted to sign either Aitken of Glasgow Rangers or Ivor Broadis. Outbid by Sunderland for the talented Welsh international they asked if the Roker club would be in a position to release their young prospect Frank Bee. Unfortunately desperation inflated the fee and it was found that Bee, the son of a Nottingham printer, was a rough diamond who the club simply did not have time to hone. It was not long before he was released and he never played in the Football League again finishing his career at wing half with Peterborough before playing five games for Boston.
