Duckworth had the fortune to have Jimmy Haydock as a schoolmaster and his coaching helped reveal his potential at an early age. His form in junior football brought plenty of offers from the Football League clubs but he rejected them all because he wanted to keep the security of his plumber's occupation. The Rovers compromised by taking him on part time but his status was as big a handicap as his versatility. Rotating between full back, half back and right wing it was not until Cowell was absent in the war that he was given the chance to settle in at left back. War time international honours appeared to confirm his arrival and after the war he settled into the first team at left back. Unhappily playing in the East Lancashire Charity Cup match he fractured his forearm in two places and the bone never set properly ending a promising career. A plumber by trade, he served his apprenticeship with his father Benjamin Duckworth of Copy Nook. He lived most of his life in Copy Nook but was living in Pringle Street at the time of his death. He was chairman of Blackburn Northern CC for a number of years until the retired in October 1956.
