For many seasons Else had earned the reputation of being one of the game's least spectacular but most reliable goalkeepers. A man who relied on positioning and working out the correct angles he seldom went for the flamboyant when the orthodox would serve. The abolition of the maximum wage created a valuation for performance and Else thought his ambitions would be best served at Ewood. For the Rovers it marked the first real upgrade in the position since the war. For a time Else was as recommended, calm, efficient almost unnoticed but in the last months of his career he began to show frailties in his game that had not previously existed. After a spell as player manager at Barrow, where he also for a time ran the social club, he trained as a mathematics teacher and taught in the area for fifteen years. In 1999 he retired and bought a house in Peyia on the island of Cyprus. When he was diagnosed with cancer he decided to return to the UK and took up residence once again in Barrow.
