A weaver from Padiham he was forced to compete for a place with Tinker Davies. On the occasions he played he had a good goal scoring record although this is probably testament to the fact that he played for a good side. A surprise move to Tottenham was unproductive but after finishing top scorer for Exeter he joined Bristol Rovers, who were in the First Division of the Southern League. He showed such versatility that he played most positions and ended as the regular centre half before embarking on a long career in the Football League back in Exeter.
