Originally a strapping centre forward who brought energy and muscle to the game he was signed from parks football by Mossley for whom he scored two goals in three games. Allowed to slip away to Hyde he attracted the Rovers interest but when signed received little opportunity until the war years, when he converted to left half. Although he was at Blackburn nearly ten years he made only two league appearances but in five years at Barrow exceeded 100 appearances. His curious second forename came from taking his mother's maiden name. When he retired he became steward at Dalton Conservative club and developing a liking for the licensed trade he ran the Mason’s Arms in Barrow and was landlord of the Black Bull Hotel in Dalton at the time of his death.
