Having failed to make the grade at both Wolverhampton and Watford a trial at Ewood, where Ken Furphy was demolishing the staff, represented Farrell's last chance of making it into the Football League. Despite his tempestuous nature his spirit and willingness impressed and he was given a contract. Time proved that his wild tendencies and mistimed tackling made him a marked man and after a spate of bookings he lost his place to the far calmer Mick Wood. Given the opportunity to move to midfield he failed to impress and was allowed to leave on a free transfer. After a spell in South Africa he returned to Morecambe but wanderlust took over and he left for Canada, hoping to play for Toronto in the NASL. A hand injury terminated this venture and he moved back to Morecambe, becoming the club's commercial manager as well as playing. He opened up an estate agency in the town and later expanded into the city of Lancaster.
