Campbell was a complete inside forward in the manner that only Scottish players were at the time. He had gained a Scottish cup winners' medal with Renton and became the first man to replicate the feat south of the border when the Rovers won the cup in 1890. He would have added to that the following year but was taken ill with pneumonia in the dressing room and had to be rushed to hospital. For two days his life was in danger but the club booked him into the Covent Garden Hydro Hospital with a personal nurse and he survived. A playmaker it was said of him that "a partner or centre forward who could not shine when Campbell was alongside him ought to secure some other occupation." It had been anticipated when he moved south that his play would improve because he no longer had to work in the dye works but he never quite found the form that made him so great at Renton. He remained in Blackburn and worked as a steward in the Reform Club until a year before he died.
