Raised in the Gorbals, the son of Irish parents from Tyrone, he came south after helping Cambuslang to victory over Parkhead. On his debut he was at fault with a goal and soon after playing in the reserves he sustained a knee injury which took a long time to improve. Three months after he came to Blackburn he almost lost his life. A lodger with Harry Campbell he turned on the gas on full and was overcome by the fumes. He was only saved because Campbell came home early and summoned medical help.
