Byrne grew up in Clonliffe Gardens and had to face up to losing his father when he was eleven and leaving home at fifteen when he accepted Manchester City’s offer to join their junior ranks. A central midfield player with the ability to thread the ball through a defence his cause was championed by both Patrick Vieira and Roy Keane as he worked his way through all age group levels of the national team. Faced with the problem of progressing amongst the international ranks at City he opted to go on loan, first in Holland and then with the Rovers. His decision to come to Ewood proved to be a mistake. He seldom figured in Coyle’s plans and in January his loan spell was cut short. Unfortunately his decision to sign for Wigan was just as bad and in half a season he made just two substitute appearances. A return to Ireland brought an invitation to join the Republic of Ireland international squad.
