Born in Fox Street he moved to the Sir Charles Napier Hotel when his father became the licensee. Educated at the Science & Art School he played with Blackburn Law until he became a boarder at Mintholme College in Hoghton. Captain of the college at both football and cricket he was approached by John Lewis who asked him to play for the Rovers' reserves. Brown refused saying that he would play only for the juniors or the first team. After two practice games he was selected for the first team and became an automatic choice, the finest dribbler the club had ever seen. Three years later he signed articles as a trainee solicitor with Holland and Callis of Northgate but the distractions of football proved too great and he aborted a legal career. His compensation was an illustrious career that produced three English cup winners' medals and England caps. Although he retired before the Football League started he came out of retirement to help in an emergency. After working as a solicitor's managing clerk he left the law again and took over as landlord of the Eagle and Child on Darwen Street.
