Douglas did not come from the stereotypical impoverished Scottish background. His father William was a Renfrew spice merchant and Jimmy attended the local grammar school. Only eight stones in weight but completely fearless Douglas played wing half or inside forward with total commitment. A pattern maker who had gained an international cap with Renfrew he set of south in search of greater rewards and glory. Barrow was a brief stopping off point (he worked for the Barrow Shipbuilding Company) but Hugh McIntyre spotted him playing at Witton. The chance of the tenancy of a public house (the Grosvenor Vaults) brought him to Blackburn at a time when the club was poised to become the world's greatest. He played in four cup finals and served the club for more than ten years. A devout man who was a Sunday school teacher at St George's Presbyterian Church, he moved to the Cotton Tree Inn but reverted to his original job when his entry into the licensed trade was not a success. He had married a girl from Bury and settled down in Gordon Road and remained there for many years.
