    Summary

Still a teenager when he joined the Rovers he left twelve years later having gained eleven international caps, an astonishing five English Cup winners' medals and a reputation throughout football as a cool, scientific player who enhanced the stature of the game. He had a classy left foot, excellent balance and a shrewd footballing brain. Later he made the change to left back without trauma. Originally he had partnered his brother at Witton forming the left flank but moved back in an emergency and never returned to inside left. Originally a tapesizer he was able to improve his occupation, becoming licensee of the Darwen and County Arms and the Audley Arms. He was also a partner in Pickering, Brown & Co, shuttle peg makers, carpenters and factory furnishers. Elected to the Rovers' board in 1902 he had to resign because he was a professional but once he was re-instated as an amateur the next year he returned. His death at his home in Whalley New Road occurred just as his son had forced his way into the Rovers' first team.
