Boothman was the son of a Blackburn railway clerk and became a stalwart of the Rovers during the war years. At one time he was the only regular member of the team and his devotion to the club earned comment from many reporters. A wing half he helped the reserves out after the war by playing in the attack. As a consequence he was selected for his league debut at centre forward. Events changed on the day of the game and he was moved to left back because Fred Duckworth was injured. He played again in that position two days later but at the end of the season went to Fleetwood where he re-joined his younger brother Jack. His son who bore the same name (and nickname), played full back for Oldham Athletic after the Second World War. Boothman remained in Fleetwood where he became a paper, rope and metal merchant.
